Happy Mother’s Day to all Malawian Mums. And indeed, mums everywhere.

The date - Oct 15 - seems to have been chosen because it coincides with World Rural Women’s Day, also called the “International Day of Rural Women”, a day dedicating to honouring the efforts of rural mothers to provide for their families and fight poverty. This makes sense since Malawi is a relatively poor and rural nation and one that has high regard for the role of women and mothers in their culture and society.

The modern version of Mother’s Day arose in the early 1900’s through the efforts of Julia Ward Howe and Anna M. Jarvis and others. But the idea of having a special day to honour mothers goes back to ancient times and existed in many different cultures.

In Malawi, Mother’s Day is a time to show love to your mother and remember all that she has done for you in life. It is also a time to celebrate the crucial role of mothers in the family and nation in general. And it is a time when people give gifts to their mothers, and when the president of Malawi will give a special speech to honour the mothers of his land.
